Make Do And Mend

It's done! Make Do and Mend is ready to head to Bittersweet for their Tilda event in a few weeks. Here's the issue-I made this quilt specifically to hang on the studio wall. Like the Produce Section quilt currently hanging, it's never been folded. There are zero creases and I'd like Make Do and Mend to stay the same way.

I think we may roll it to get it to the shop today and hopefully they'll honor my wishes to not fold it. 

Above are a few more blocks going into the Tilda Sampler I'm working on Marty which I'll continue to work all day today.

I had a customer stop by yesterday to drop off a top and to have me look over a few of her patterns for editing prior to her putting them out there for sale. She and her husband were here for about an hour. I worked another hour or so on Marty and then got right into working on Make Do.

It took the rest of the evening to get it trimmed, bound, and labeled because I couldn't just make a simple label. I actually made one of the spool blocks to use as the label so it would be cohesive to the quilt. 

I haven't made a label in so long I forgot what I should have put into it. After putting the quilt over DW's belly bar, I remembered I forgot to put the city and state in there so I'll have to do that first thing this morning. 

Lots going on in the neighborhood today. The north neighbors have construction people over trying to get their drainage fixed and their flood damage taken care of from a few weeks ago. The south neighbors are getting their barn lumber delivered and the guy is out at the road trying to figure out how to unload his semi with all their stuff. Wheeee!

Plans Cancelled

Apparently dates and days were confused yesterday so our outing has been rescheduled for May 12th. That means I was here all day working. Which is good. I got a lot done since I started so early anyway.

The Tilda Sampler has been started and here's some of the quilting going in...

Not all the pics are wanting to come in so we'll post more tomorrow. I'm keeping this one a little more loose than previous ones as this is a gift for a granddaughter. I want her to be able to snuggle with it. After working on this I moved over to Bernie to work on Make Do and Mend...

And it's quilted! I had some great lighting coming in through the west window to give the texture effect. Now I need to bind and label. Maybe tonight?

More on the Tilda Sampler today and I might get to sew something tonight since I really haven't in almost three weeks. Well, except for making the backing/batting for the pillow top for Carrie. 

Going Out Again Today

I have a customer coming to drop off before lunch. Another coming to pick up and drop off both after lunch. And, I'll be joining these two customers, along with another quilting friend, for lunch at the Riverwalk today. Fun!

The embroidered girls are all finished. While frame ironing for the next quilt on Marty, I finished row four and began row five in Make Do and Mend. I'm blogging early because I know I have a very social day ahead and not much quilting will take place if I don't start early.

Anyway...here's what I'll be working on for the next week on Marty...

Look familiar? It may not with the background light shining through the window but it's another Tilda Sampler like the eight or ten I've already quilted.

While I was putting this on the frame this morning, I noticed the quilt top was rather stiff. I believe a LOT of fabric treatment was utilized while making it. Funnily enough, I'll be working two Tilda quilts on each of the frames. What are the odds?

Time to Get Out

I've been cooped up in the house for more than two weeks. Cranking away at the long arms and doing not much of anything else has been about the consistency of my life. 

When I wake up in the morning I lay in bed to go over my day in my head and today, studio work wasn't filling my thoughts. At all. Burnout? Boredom? The need for something social? I asked Jim if he would be willing to take me somewhere. 

I can drive. Certainly. But we spent yesterday apart and I didn't want a repeat today. Neither did he. So, we are jumping in the truck and headed to Elm Creek. 

We ended up at there and I purchased a few things. So did Jim.

I was in the middle of blogging yesterday morning and Lisa, Paul, and [new] Kona popped over to say hello while Dave was out mowing. Right after we chatted for some time, and the dogs all played, we took off for our drive.

I didn't get to finish my blog. 

Back to Saturday. The customer wanted me to use the left over backing and batting to quilt her pillow cover. But, it was too short...

Once I got that quilted up and removed, I had to (re)load this...

When the customer dropped this off and we discussed it, she said she didn't want ANYTHING in the embroidered sections except to ditch the blocks. I questioned this but I do as the customer tells me. 

After she got it home and looked at it further, decided she changed her mind and wanted something in those embroidered blocks because this is what happens when you leave large portions unquilted...

So all I need to do is get some cross hatching put into each of these nine blocks. Sounds easy enough, right? HA!

I'll be working on this most of today. I have a customer (and friends) coming sometime today to drop off a quilt to be done, and I'm not sure what time they'll be here. I'm thinking probably after lunch?

Rain Delay

Like all other sports held outside, the protection I have over the long arms is that of protecting people during thunderstorms. This was coming at us around 3:15 yesterday...

Not good

I could hear thunder rumbling in the distance and waited as long as I could to turn Marty off and get him unplugged.

Despite the hour-long rain delay, I still managed to get into row #8 last night. No work on Bernie or Make Do and Mend (again). 

I'm skipping my grandsons birthday party to finish this quilt out, get her matching pillow top on and hopefully get it quilted. And, Carrie has another one in queue that needs to be finished, but more on that one later. Here's a final pic of the quilting going into the quilt...

Jim is headed down not only for the birthday party, but to drop DW off to the hospital. And, pick up groceries on his way back as well as building supplies from Menards. 

We are having a set of stairs put into the side of the hill leading down to the lake. We ear marked part of our tax refund for this project and it will probably be started in a week or so. Walking on all those acorns/acorn tops is not fun getting up and down from the shore so this is a much needed addition!

Signs of Life

A few of the geese in the area have actually hatched goslings. We saw three this morning. Our resident geese lost their nest during our heavy rains earlier this month but there is a pair that somehow managed to hatch some babies. 

We have a Killdeer down by our "beach" who seems to have made her nest nearby. She scolds every time we let the dogs out onto the deck. Our trees and bushes are showing a little green and their own baby leaves are starting to show. Ah spring.

Meanwhile, during the beautiful day we had yesterday, I'm in the studio laying down tons of thread. Here's some more quilting going into Carries Tulips...

Rows four and five are in and the sixth row is started. Today my goal is to get six and seven done and get number eight started for tomorrow. Because I worked until after 7:00 getting row six started, no work was completed on Make Do and Mend.

Once Jim gets back from town we have to load DW up into the truck so he can head to Lansing tomorrow. We have rain expected later today and loading him while it's raining is not cool. I will not be going down with Jim as I have deadlines here starting to stress me out a bit. 

Another No Yesterday

I had another call for what would have been a new customer and I sent her to nether regions to get her quilts quilted. It was hard to say no; I like to please people. But my feet and back are starting to really fire up in protest about the hours I'm working.

Here is some more quilting going into Carries Tulips... 

After my 9:15 left yesterday morning I started right in and worked very diligently on this quilt. Jim was even gone most of the day working outside or recycling metal so he wasn't here to distract me. Yet, I've just started row four. 

I jumped on Bernie for a few hours after 5:00 when I quit customer work. I have row four all 'colored' in and now have the background/sashing to get quilted. 

Today is going to be much of the same. On Marty I'll work rows four and five and on Bernie row four will hopefully be background filled. 

I Said No!

I had an inquiry yesterday about some quilting a new customer needed. I actually referred them out to another long armer. I just can't take in any more business. My feet and back are saying no.

Getting the two borders in

I'm doing an every other checkerboard in the sashing between each of the blocks. I did a lot of unsewing yesterday...

It's supposed to be every other!

And the rest of the week is going to be spent on working this quilt during the day. As much as I told myself I wasn't going to get nuts with it...well...that didn't work out so well. I have a bamboo batt in there and that gives me permission to lay down more thread. And, even though it's local, this is going to be in a show. 

After working on Tulips well past 'quitting' time, I moved over to Bernie to work on Make Do and Mend. I have row three completely in! Actually, I've started all the mint in the top of row four and did that while talking to our son in Ohio. Speaking of sons...

This one received his promotion to First Lieutenant this morning in Germany!

Typical Monday

Since I had my batteries recharged from the weekend I was rearing to go yesterday. First up, Dianes quilt on Bernie. Here's some of the quilting that went into it...

Swirl hook

I had to call Gall Sewing about my issues with DW. I was advised to not use him anymore until they could take a look. Not only is he slightly out of time, but he's varying his speed even in manual mode, his on-board screen goes blank every once in a while, and he made a slightly electric smell on Friday. He's going down Saturday to have them take a look.

Since I can no longer use DW until further notice, we had to move the Make Do and Mend quilt over to Bernie now that I was done with all of Dianes tops...for now.

Another tulip top!

The top above is completely custom and is going to a local show. I'll probably be working this through most of the rest of the week. I have an idea about some of it but still need to work through the sashing portions. 

After fighting to get the Make Do and Mend quilt transferred over (we never really did get it loaded straight), I had planned on getting row three complete. It's nearly there, but now that I'm on a smaller throat space, I have to change out thread colors twice as many times. It had been a long day and it was approaching 8:00 when I started closing up shop.

A Much Needed Break

Yesterday turned into another snuggle Sunday in the afternoon. I just puttered around the house doing some chores in the morning and making lunch while Jim did some light outdoor work. I guess I needed the battery recharge since I slept well both Saturday and Sunday nights and I even took a long nap yesterday *gasp*. 

Jim did get Lia's car out and took it for a short drive (we don't currently have it plated) down our road and around the neighborhood. We don't get it out much but have to check and make sure it's in running order for when they come back in two years.

I'll be on Bernie during part of the day today working this quilt...

I'm just going to drive an E2E in it as it's so busy and not much of any custom work will show. 

The quit on Marty still needs to be removed and trimmed, but all the other post-quilting work is done. I have several May/June deadlines in queue and one of those will be loaded next.

Midland Quilt Show

The morning started out busy yesterday. A quilt show in Midland and then off to Meijer to get this weeks groceries/birthday gifts for the grandkids.

The quilt show was somewhat disappointing. There were only a few "stunner" quilts and the remaining quilts were merely for utility use. The quilting in most of them was loose and lumpy. And hey, if that's what you want, great. But when those quilts are hung the loose quilting doesn't flatter them.

Tantor

Look familiar? This is a quilt Linda M. made and as you can guess, I quilted it; last fall. People sure were going nuts over him and he should receive the wall hanging best of show award. Linda is very humble about her winnings and unless I ask, won't know how he came out in the voting. 

It's nice to see a quilt I did in its entirety! It lets me see where I need to improve and how I did with the overall effect.

I didn't head out to the studio after we returned because we hadn't eaten lunch yet (can't afford to go out anymore) so had to make that and watch our Saturday movie.

One movie turned into several and I just wasn't very motivated to head out there to work so swapped out Saturday for Sunday. Maybe?

As we were finishing our last movie (My Big Fat Greek Wedding II) our power went out. But nobody elses did up and down the lake. Bellers may have lost theirs but they are not currently up this weekend so they weren't here to ask. 

Jim went out to investigate and with our wind (though not alarmingly high) it appeared the ceramic insulator above our transformer broke and then pulled the connecting fuse out. It would have only affected us and Bellers because it was the transformer right here in the back yard.

Consumers said they'd be out around 1:30 a.m. so Jim waited for them and sent me to bed. It was a potential fire hazard so he wanted to make sure all was well until they arrived. They were early arriving around 1:10 and had it fixed within the hour. 

I'm glad this didn't happen during the day when I was trying to long arm. Oh man, I would have been hopping mad. 

Updated Web Site

After finishing the quilt on Marty and working on mine on DW, I finally sat down and (re)worked my web site. Its original intention has changed now that I'm beginning to wind down so I needed to modify it so not to encourage new business.

While at retreat last week I did a few short demonstrations/clinics about long arm quilting, when to get custom, and how to work borders. The Tulip quilt was using the techniques I subscribe to and look at how flat the border lays as well as how straight it is...

ALL borders should be like this and if you think you're going to kid your long armer about not measuring or using mitered piecing in your borders, they WILL know. It introduces all sorts of issues in the long run.

Jim and I are off to Midland to attend the quilt show and get a few groceries he missed when shopping local earlier this week. I'll work on DW later this afternoon/evening and get Diane's quilt on Bernie marked out for an E2E design I'm putting in on Monday.

Foggy Friday

Wow was it foggy outside all night and this morning. The lake was the highest it's been in six years yesterday and seeing it back to where it should be was a ray of sunshine even through our mostly cloudy day. It will recede quickly since the dam is still wide open, but there is hope!

I did not work on DW last night but instead started row five on Marty to get a head start on today. I have all of this evening and the weekend to work on DW so decided to get The Tulips done first. And, there's a quilt show in Midland today and tomorrow we are going to attend at some point. A few of my friends have quilts in the show and it's always exciting to see them hung!

Jim has been skinning a quilt for a customer of mine. What's skinning you ask? When a quilt is poorly quilted and removed from the long arm and then the quilt maker decides the long arming was not what she wanted all the stitches have to be removed so it can be started over. 

I did not quilt this quilt. She took it to another long armer because she knew I was over booked. And, she lives way up north and it was over the winter this past year so decided to give this other gal a try. Here's the before...

E2E and the lumps it leaves in the piecing

I am not here to judge. To me, this is typical digitized E2E quilting. There are bumps and lumps because when doing E2E, not everything is ditched and in my opinion, leaves everything looking sloppy. This exact pattern received first place in a show a year ago that I custom quilted. I'll do another before and after  pic once I get it on the frame later this summer, and, after I custom quilt it. 

On Marty all day until the Tulips are finished and then over to DW the rest of the weekend. 

Congrats Sandford Dam

Sanford Dam (two lakes away) has cleared its inspection and can now start to refill. With last nights rain it won't take long to refill it. Ours is past winter lake levels and heading towards summer heights. Unfortunately, it won't last long as our dam is still wide open.

Tildas Make Do and Mend

The third row is complete on Marty. The quilt on DW has the third row started. Fact: Pebbles take a lot long to work than any other motif to quilt.

I have a dentist appointment first thing this morning. Jim is going in with me to set out moms recycling as she is up north right now just taking a few days to relax and travel. Man that woman loves to run the roads. 

Once I return from town I'll be back at the Tulip quilt all day. Yesterday was another 11 hour day and I'm paying for it. The rain and my deadline worries had me up until 4:00 this morning. I'm exhausted and my feet/knees are screaming. But, I must persevere. That's what got me through basic training, baling hay, and raising three rambunctious boys. 😀

More T-Storms

We were watching the season finale of The Voice and even over the loud TV, rumble, rumble, rumble. They lasted until after 1:30 and the lightning show was wild.  

Another 11 hour day yesterday. Six+ on Marty and another almost four on DW. The second row in Bernadettes quilt is done and I started working the next sashing before shutting Marty down for the day. Here is some of her quilting going in...

Sashing and border treatment

I did not get the second row finished on DW. I had to pick substitute threads from the So Fine! to the Glide so that took some time. And, then while I was working the piece, did not like some of the substitutions and had to make several trips back and forth to the thread cabinet to find suitable replacements. I only have the pearl and mint to get into the background, but at 8:00 I was pretty tired. 

Jim was sick yesterday morning. He used to have juvenile epilepsy and strobe lights/erratic lightning will cause him later issues. We watched the lightning the previous night and yesterday he was dizzy and very nauseated. He went back to bed and slept until nearly lunch time. 

Lucy was not happy. She sat outside his bedroom door waiting for him to get up; she even got sick mid-way through the morning I think from worry. Dogs know this stuff about their owners. 

She certainly is his dog. More rain expected today but hopefully no thunderstorms. Our lake is nearly as high as it was two weeks ago and if we do get more rain, I'm sure it will be the fullest it's been in six years. Unfortunately, our gate is wide open and the depth will diminish as soon as the rains stop. 

Wowsa Thunderstorms

It sure was a strobe light show out there all night. And the thunder was shaking the house. Needless to say, not much sleep took place. But, as they say in Hollywood, the show must go on.

Does this look familiar?

This was done at the retreat last week. It needs to be quilted ASAP for Bittersweet Quilt Shop for display purposes. The owner needs to make room for more Lori Holt items coming in and needs to move this kit.

The first row is completed. And, the first row in the Make Do and Mend is also completed but not without DW and I having some issues (again). 

I tried everything I've learned over the past 13 or so years on how to rectify his skipping issue. And the skipping was becoming worse the longer I fussed with him. I stepped back and thought about the situation and came to the conclusion it had to be the thread. 

He was behaving perfectly until I took the strip quilt off and put the Tilda quilt on. The only thing I did in the change out was give him a new needle and change thread. Why all of a sudden was he skipping so badly? I tried out a few needles yesterday and even altered their position on the post without any luck so it had to be the thread. 

Unfortunately, I did not have another So Fine! cone to switch out so moved over to the Glide thread. Can you see the difference?

So Fine! vs Glide Thread

The circle on the left is So Fine! and the circle on the right is Glide. Pardon the erratic circles as I was again, not correctly quilting as I was watching for skips. So Fine! is a matt thread and Glide is a tri-lobal poly that is shiny. And, since DW is stuck on not behaving unless he has Glide in him, I'm on a time crunch and can't wait for another cone to get here from wherever I could find one so Glide it is. 

Today is going to be a repeat from yesterday. Hopefully thunderstorms will stay away until I'm done long arming tonight. And, since I'm on the big machines for 10 or so hours, not even any piecing is being done. 

Happy 41st Anniversary

It's been a ride for sure and we're still in this rollercoaster of late. We'll make it together; we always do.

This is another marked day; Caleb went back to work today after a three-month paternity leave. Ben started a new job today after being off for six+ months. I have the start of my long arm marathon due to deadlines so I'll be working mega hours both on customer stuff and my own.

I worked yesterday on DW and while I noticed him getting a little weird Saturday, yesterday he was really being a dork. Skipped stitches while making pebbles. My pebbles were looking awful because I was looking for skipped stitches instead of where I was supposed to be going. Here's some of the quilting going into the Make Do and Mend top...

While playing with the dogs this morning the computer and printer power was shut off. So, now my Mac is acting all stupid. The neighbors had the propane truck get stuck in their drive already. Hopefully working today will turn out better than it's starting. 

Working Seven Days a Week

I'll be working every day until these deadlines are met. People don't realize that when they stick me with a quick turn-around deadline it puts a lot of pressure on me. I'm not 20 anymore and to work seven days a week takes its toll. I now understand why folks are getting out of this profession.

Even though I'm 'working' seven days a week, some of that work is for my quilts since they are being asked to be put into shows/seminars/workshops. But I still have to stand and hunch and stoop and bend to get my quilts quilted as well. 

Yesterday I unloaded the strip quilt, set it in the guest chair, and loaded the Tilda Make Do and Mend top...

Make Do and Mend

I've already got all the colors quilted in because I knew when I was building this top what I was going to put in there. However, the pattern designers long armer did some really tight matchstick quilting in the background and that's just not what I want to put in. 

I'm going to put squares on point in the border as well as the sashing strips across each row. I think I've settled on a background fill I can live with but as always, once the needle is set in, the decision may change. 

Oh, I have a TV in the studio now. Moms basement flooded with the last heavy rains we received and she had a brand new one in the basement whose box got wet. She asked if I wanted it but couldn't guarantee it would work. 

Well, it's a few years old so the technology isn't up to today's standards. It does indeed work, it's connected to the WIFI but not the cable, and I can stream movies and programs for background noise instead of music all the time. I can't really watch it because it's above the batting closet way up in the air, but that was not its intended purpose anyway.

Not All The Details

So I'll skim over last week about our retreat. I did complete a number of tops. The first was the Fireworks top...

Moving along, I completed the Scrappy Goodness top but neglected to capture a pic. Those were all done on day 1.

Day 2: I was piecing the sides of the cowboy boots when it was my time to get my pedicure. My feet were so happy!

I pieced this top together. This had been hanging out in my retreat tub for too long so it needed to be done...

I had also been holding onto two Rayola preschool quilts to make so I got those done on day three. I started on another project on day three but could not continue it as I need a full design wall to work with it. I started another project on day four but was cut short because we needed to start packing up. Here are a few pics of other projects other folks were working on...

Before I left the retreat I had one emergent top given to me, one to just ditch, and another Tilda Snowman pillow top to quilt. When I got home I had another two emergent requests come in and then a request for me to finish quilting my Tilda Make Do and Mend top for a Tilda event Bittersweet Quilt Shop is hosting in May. 

That means juggling some things around on two of the frames. The one I was going to start on Monday had to be taken off Marty and a new back is being frame ironed. My strip quilt was removed from DW so I could work on the Tilda top for Bittersweet. 

This was the first retreat Linda and I have hosted together and we started taking names of those who may be interested for another next year. Not only did EVERYBODY sign up that was in attendance (which is never heard of), but we had an additional three people who stopped by and sign up as well. We are cutting off the number of attendees at 35. We only have 13 openings left. 

Back in a Week-ish

I was in the studio for more than usual on a Sunday. After doing my daily strip I found something Jim needed for his man cave.

We have a table rubbing against our newly painted walls out there and I needed to make a Spartan-something-or-another to put on the table.

It still needs to be quilted and bound, but it'll be here when I return on Thursday night. And, then I'm off again on Friday to spend the day with my brother and mother. 

We set up our retreat room last night at Riverwalk and I'm heading out here in just a few minutes since we can start sewing at 8:00. So excited! This is going to be a fun week because I get to see people I only see a few times a year. 

I have to make a quilt delivery at some point today. Probably later this afternoon during the "sleepy" hour.

Remember me saying yesterday we are having bad smells coming from the new water heater? Smells like rotten eggs and after today's shower, this proves we have sulfur being released from the anode rod in the water heater...

Not supposed to be this color

My ring(s) are usually very bright silver. That's Jims project while I'm gone next week. While I know eggs are associated with Easter, this is taking it a bit far.😉

I did my strip block yesterday. I started two pineapples, and in between all of that I was packing. And making Jim his anniversary gift; a stool cover/pad for his stool out in the studio. 

I keep thinking of little things here and there to grab (vitamins, acorn fabric treatment) and am putting them in their respective places/piles while making this weeks temperature blocks/row.

Through April 2nd

Today I'll continue to grab stuff as I think of it. I am going out to do my strip today since I'll be gone for the whole week and maybe a little something else. Jim is making us cookies for the meet and greet tomorrow night.

I did drag out my brothers Flying Pig (Laura Heine) to transfer the design onto the pattern ease fabric yesterday after working the temperature blocks, but that's about as far as it went before my batteries were getting low. 🐇🐇

We Have Stinky

Once again we have heavy rains and outside it smells like poopy (coming from the neighbors). The new water heater in the house is starting to smell like sulfur. This is a situation we've encountered in the past after replacing the water heater where the anode rod inside creates this smell. Bleh all around!

That quilt is done and 'filed' away so on to her last one after returning. 

For the next week I'll be unavailable in the studio. Setting up tomorrow night starts the whole shebang and today I'm going to be packing for said retreat all day today. 

I have to pack stuff that I normally don't have to take up to The Springs. I have to pack my regular stuff (projects and supplies), and then I have to pack my clothes/toiletries which I also don't have to pack for The Springs retreats since I stay here at the house.

Jim is on his way to East Lansing for our grandsons birthday party. I chose not to go as there are some family dynamics there I'd rather not deal with today. Not before the retreat anyway. 

I did my strip yesterday after getting Dianes quilt taken care of and then I did two pineapples. It takes about an hour and 20 minutes to do two pineapples. I may take them to retreat...or not. I'm still unsure about that and will make that decision when I start packing today. 

We Will Now Pause For a Station Break

There were no thunderstorms predicted for yesterday. Just freezing rain/snow and then just rain. Not only did we receive a LOT of rain (over an inch) during the course of the day, but in the mid-afternoon we had about two hours worth of thunderstorms. Long arm off. 

I made two pineapple blocks (they take about an hour each to make) while I was waiting for the storms to blow through. Once we thought we were in the clear I fired up DW and did my strip for the day to make sure there weren't going to be anymore surprise weather visits. That happened twice during the one that went through earlier where we thought all was clear and then boom rolls the thunder.

Dianes big rag quilt was finished and her next one on Bernie was basted in and ready to quilt before lunch time.

Unfortunately, the quilting pics are not coming out this morning so I'll try again later before I get started.

Because there was a weather delay/intermission, I worked until around 7:00 last night and felt like, even though there was a pausing situation, I accomplished a lot. This quilt above is almost half done already and it helped that I was on the phone with my eldest while he was driving home.
