What the Heck?

Well, I marked the quilt I was working on Bernie and had intended to fire up the long arm, but then, squirrel.

Here's the deal. I saw a YouTube video on the Handi Quilter site a few years back. Kim and Kristina were demonstrating how to appliqué on the long arm (rather than having to do all of that on your domestic). Kristina showed a quick blip about a cathedral window she did and then the video was quickly over.

The community outcried for Kristina to do a little more in depth dive into how she did her cathedral window and about nine months later, they indeed did a video on this method of making a the one she quickly showed us previously. I have had the background for this for months, and am just finally getting into setting it up. Jim figured I needed to cut 640 'petals' for what I mapped out here. I have a little over 200 cut. 

My wrist was telling me that was enough so then I moved over to starting those strips from the three jelly rolls I purchased a few weeks ago. 

Here's where I left off around 7:30 last night...

Ready for pressing and getting together

There are fifty strips here (well, one is on the pressing table waiting). All the seams need to be pressed and then I have to join them in the order they are laying here on the cutting table. This is all I'm planning to do today other than getting things around for retreat later tonight. We can't arrive before 6:00 so I have all day to play. The weather is cooperating in that it's supposed to rain all. day. long. Welcome "real" fall.

Well, here it is. I had every intention of giving this particular quilt away or offering it up for sale. After I quilted it openly and finished the binding, it's just too snuggly and nice to do either, so I think this is going to have to join my quilt family here at the house.

And that's my Golden Doodle, Hazel, posing with the quilt in our side yard. She likes the quilt too.

I quilted the quilt openly with gentle random waves running vertically. I was going to use my Handi Quilter ProStitcher program to actually do the quilting, but found that just doing it free motion gave it more of an organic feel and look. I have a Handi Quilter Fusion and quilting this particular piece only took an afternoon to complete.

It's been a few weeks since I've blogged because of the Jelly Roll Wave quilt-along. We are nearing the end and here is the completed top. I have added some additional borders along the sides to balance out the length. Enjoy!

Here's the rest of the blocks for our Jelly Roll Wave quilt-along. I wanted the top to be bigger than just twin size so I added a few borders and used up all the remaining scraps of the jelly roll remaining from the initial cuts. That pic will be coming for our next link-up.

This was a fun use of a jelly roll I had not a clue what to do with. I love how this turned out and is still hanging out on my design wall until I can get it under the long arm.

Jelly Roll Waves Quilt Along

The background fabric looks black here, but in all actuality, it's a medium gray; which makes these bright colors really pop. No, I haven't started sewing the rows/columns together yet because I want to make sure everybody plays nice before committing to my layout.

Lemon Goes to Surgery

Had to do some frog repair this morning after I found a bean on the bedroom floor. Apparently Lemon has sprung a leak.

Lemon is one of two frogs that sleep with me every night to provide weight on my feet. Without him, I don't sleep as well.

The fabrics are all cut up and I've started piecing for the Jelly Roll Quilt Along. It's kind of addicting, and I've only had to pull one set apart for incorrect placement. No, wait, I didn't end up pulling them apart; I ended up using them in another block. All is good.

Nothing got loaded onto the long arm as I got wrapped up in the project above all day. Maybe today?

Jelly Roll Quilt Along

The chosen fabrics for a quilt-along Katie and I are doing. This is an orphan jelly roll so old the rubber band surrounding the strips was dry rotted. It's time to put it to some use.

I was going to go with a stark white background, but had more of the dark gray left over from the Selvedge project. I think the white would have gotten a little lost in some of the strips.
