Love Letter Top Done!

Lunch with friends is fun isn't it? And then the icing on the cake was a phone call from another quilting friend later in the afternoon. I miss talking to people of like mind and the retreat in September can't get here fast enough. 

Although, Jim is pretty supportive of my quilting passion. He visits the studio usually every day. Which is a great thing because I've heard awful stories from other ladies who quilt whose husbands/partners are not nearly as enthusiastic as Jim is. That's sad. 

I did get the first row completed on the Flea Market before leaving for lunch and the second row started after getting back.

While on the phone I stuffed my earbuds into my ears while talking. I was working on Love Letters and after I hung up realized I only had a block or two to go to finish it. So, that's what I did. Not only that, I ended up taking the time to actually get it all together.

I don't have enough floor space to get the whole top in the pic, but you get the idea. I think I'll finish the table runner I've been working on while using it as leaders and enders before I start anything new on that machine. But then, once that is done. HA! I get to start something new. Yay!

I picked up background fabric for each of the three patterns I have hanging around that I want to start so now I'm all ready to start digging into a new project! Don't ya love starting new projects? First, work. Happy Friday! 

Making a quilt 15 Times

Could you pick a pattern out of your pattern library or from a quilt you completed in the past, and want to make it 15 times? Long arming is pretty much the same way. To quilt the exact same quilt 15 times is unheard of. Yet, here I go. 

Here is the second Flea Market in a week I'll be working on for the next week.

I truly like doing this pattern. It's not TOO labor intensive and there aren't a gazillion thread changes. I've gotten it down to a routine. The first one I did took me seven days to work. I have it down to about 4 1/2 days now. 

I do the borders a little different for each one, and I move the quilting around in the dresdens; what one pink flower had in one the next one might get something different. Here are the borders going into this one. 

I love doing feathers

This quilt is going to be an heirloom and I like to put heirloom things into the quilting so this one got feathers rather than a piano key or loose bubble feather. 

Yesterday was grocery day since we were pretty much out of half our salad fixings and we had to hit Lowe's to get some deck sealer and paint for some of the trim work around that house that's looking pretty tired. We didn't get everything unloaded until after 7:00. Too late to start something in the studio so it was an early night off for me. 

More of the same today. Although, I am going out to lunch with a customer/friend and will probably be gone most of the midafternoon. 

At Our Age

Whenever we can we visit with friends and family. Every day is a gift and should be enjoyed as best as possible. We love our neighbors to the north and when they are free to take a few hours out of their day to catch up we jump on it.

We live here full time and they do not, so their visits have been brief over the past six years since there's no real reason for them to hang out long other than to do lawn/house maintenance.

The Flea Market quilt for Julie is finished. The frame ironing on the next Flea Market is also finished and I'll be loading as soon as I get done here. There's a very sad story that goes with my next job but I'm not going to get into why. Tender care and love will be especially thick on this one!

After working and visiting with the neighbors, I headed back out to the studio to make a Love Letter block and then started blanket stitching Flower Power.

Here's the first block of the 15 needed. I didn't have enough time to work on DW unfortunately because of the chat session next door, but I did have a little time to go through the next three quilt tops I'll be tackling. I discovered I did not have nearly enough scraps/leftovers to complete the Granny Squares pattern by Lori Holt. 

Instead of trying to piece meal it together, I did break down and purchase a fat quarter bundle from a private seller on Etsy. I don't usually do that, but her prices were pretty good and she had the particular bundle I wanted. 

More of the same today so not much else to write about. 

Finally, Some Rain

While everybody in the state was getting rain the past day or so, we were not. The dirt pile Jim was moving, which is mostly all clay, was like dustbowl Oklahoma. It was dry throughout even to the bottom. 

Last night we finally received a thunderstorm and some decent rain. Even the dirt under the oak trees is wet. Hallelujah!

One more day on Julie's Flea Market and it should be a wrap. Fingers crossed. I did a Love Letter block after working and then realized I hadn't done any Temperature blocks in a while. Two weeks actually. I don't like getting that far behind and so took some time last night to get those caught up. Isn't it pretty?

That took most of the rest of the night so nothing else was accomplished. More of the same today minus the temperature quilt. Hopefully I'll be able to jump on DW and get the Raven finished. I am so excited to get the next quilt loaded but am not going to share just yet in case something else grabs my fancy. 😁

I Have a Brain

Since I figured out the back door to getting pics in here, I thought I better post the embroidery I did last week for the Quilt Room quilt.

Definitely needs ironing

When I took the pic I was just passing through the studio and didn't want to fire up the iron, but all the labels and blocks are ready for me to start this masterpiece. However, it will still be weeks before beginning. I already have three projects in the works on two separate machines and that's enough for now.

The day hours will consist of total Marty work on Julie's Flea Market quilt. The afternoon should follow with what has become the norm, but the neighbors are up, meaning the studio work in my head may physically change when that time arrives.

Why Do I Post Everyday?

Generally I'm out in the studio everyday and since this is my quilting diary, that's one of the reasons. Another reason is to make me accountable for what I'm going to be doing later on that day, and reason number three is to summarize what I did the previous day.

If I wait two days, details are often forgotten. When I don't post anything I wasn't here to do anything quilting related. 

Yesterday was one of those days when I wasn't here all day. But what did I do Friday?  

After working on Flea Market for the day I made a Love Letter block. I did the two leaf blocks left in Flower Power, and then instead of jumping on DW, I sorted and glued down the circle parts of Flower Power. 

Now I can start stitching all of those down. The class for this quilt used a variety of stitches to go around each circle. I'm not doing that. Just a regular blanket stitch is good enough for me. 

Yesterday, despite not being in the studio, I did do something quilt related. I've been wanting to get down to The Hen House quilt shop in Charlotte so Jim and I took a trip there after Jacobs birthday party in Lansing. Now there's a hidden gem! I know the owner and most of the people who work there and so it was like a mini reunion. These ladies all belonged to the guild we had there (until Covid killed it) and catching up over the past four years took over an hour. I picked up this layer cake to add to the fabric for the Quilt Room I'll be starting soon. 

I haven't been sleeping very well lately (again). I did get some sleep last night, but the previous two nights I saw 3:00 a.m. and beyond and still got up before 8:30. Today I'm not feeling too good and my energy level is about zero. It'll be a quiet day reading and snuggling with the girls. 

Let's Try This Again

I don't know if any photos will come through today? I worked all day on the Flea Market quilt on Marty. You don't remember the Flea Market? The one I've already quilted about 100 times? You know. This one!

Another Flea Market

Okay, I got this photo in through the 'back door', if you will. And to make things even better? The next one to load is the same top, different owner. And do these ever take the time to work!

While I was working Flea Market, Jim was working the stove. Here's his pickle project from yesterday and he has more this morning to put up. But we're both in our happy place. Despite my belly aching about the Flea Market quilts, I love doing them and wouldn't trade my job for any other in the world!

Nothing else done in the studio yesterday. We had several errands to run last night; sending quilts to customers, getting wood and slides (or failure to get said wood and slides), and groceries. 

Lots to Report

But not many pics. I finished Ginny's quilt right before lunch. After lunch, Jim and I needed to find him some wide mouth lids for his pickles. We started to head towards Colonville Hardware but stopped at the grocery story in Beaverton. They used to have a large canning rack including sleeves of lids. 

They no longer have those and while I was in the store looking Jim was calling Colonville to make sure they had some before we drove all the way over there. Good thing he checked. They did not have any and so we picked up four boxes of the lids that the grocery store in Beaverton had.

I did a Love Letter and a Flower Power leaf block before jumping on DW. All the while I'm frame ironing the next back on Marty because I have two customer quilts I need to get done ASAP. After working on DW for a few hours I decided that was enough and noticed it was only 6:30. Embroidery?

Yep, and all the pieces are embroidered that need to go into the Quilt Room. 

I am having trouble getting my phone to talk to the Mac. Our iCloud is nearly full and the Mac won't accept any more information. That's how it syncs. Maybe tomorrow I'll have this figured out?

They Use To Make Fun Of Me

The boys used to say I had so many quilts on the walls that I may have to start putting them on the ceiling. Does this qualify?

It looks great up there but I must admit it's going to get some getting use to in having something hanging from the ceiling. 

While Jim was hanging that up for me I was continuing with Ginny's quilt on Marty. I slipped a few hidden things into it and this is one of them.

I have one more day on her quilt and then I can call that a wrap. After working her quilt I did a Love Letter block and then finished getting together section four (of five). I did a Flower Power leaf block (only two more of those to go) while talking to Andrew and then headed right over to DW to work on the Raven.

Swirl Feather

This is a new-to-me motif I have wanted to use for several months now and thought this was the perfect opportunity to incorporate a swirl (mimicking flight) and the feather (mimicking the bird) into a quilt. 

Jim is going out mowing. I had a few texts flying around this morning regarding Shipshewana in November. One girl would like to abstain this year (too much other stuff going on around that time). Her replacement not comfortable going down under the circumstances surrounding getting her there. And one to Virginia and Monica to see if I could stay with them this year. Looks like I have everything sorted and can now move along with my morning.

We have to run to Colonville Hardware this afternoon. Pickles are on and Jim needs wide-mouth lids. They have the best price and we like going there anyway. It's hard for me to start a new quilt in the afternoon and I think Ginny's quilt will only take this morning to finish. A period of celebration is needed after completing each quilt I think? 😗

Post PT

I don't remember being useless after my PT last year but it affects all people differently. Jim did nothing when he got home from PT yesterday. 

After lunch with Cheryl yesterday and upon getting home near quitting time I was not of a customer long arming mind. I did a Love Letter block, a Flower Power leaf block and then I moved over to DW and started in on this.

Today I'll be on Marty all day today. No appointments for the day (that I know of) so I should get a large chunk of Ginny's quilt done. 

Quilting, but Not

I didn't do anything in the studio but I did get a good portion of the embroidery done for the Quilt Room pattern. 

I'll chip away at that some more when I have a free hour or so during daylight hours. 

I'll be on Marty this morning. I have a lunch meeting at 12:30 in town and then I'll be back at it when I return this afternoon. Jim has PT earlier than me and will be done around the time I have to be at Riverwalk so we have to drive two trucks into town today. Isn't that silly? 

Enough

Ever have one of those days when you wake up and think to yourself 'I have to thoroughly clean all the bathrooms'? Today was one of those days. I could not take it any longer and everything needed to be dusted, washed, and rust-removed. I just finished.

We headed to Standish, Pinconning and Alder yesterday. When we got home and right after lunch we headed next door to visit our neighbors. It was a particularly unproductive day in the studio. I did, after returning from the neighbors house, get the binding on this wall hanging.

I'm hoping to hang this from the center beam in the studio today but Jim is out spraying around the house and then inside for bugs. We do this periodically to keep critters outside. I can't have bugs in here.

Not much else going on for the remainder of the day today. While snuggling with the dogs later I hope to work on the last embroidery section for the Quilt Room quilt and then I can start piecing it with confidence that all of the embroidery work is complete. 

Just got word from my friend over in Crystal that the pontoon registration for my grandfathers pontoon hasn't yet arrived. We may not be getting it after all if this thing doesn't show up. 

Retirement

Jim is retired and it's funny what he does around the property throughout the day. He helped the neighbor get his tractor back upright when the neighbor decided to try to move his new sand pile. 

Mid way through my work day I buzzed over the Pieces for a few backings and one other fabric needed for the Quilt Room quilt I'll be starting shortly. When I shut Marty down for the afternoon I completed one Love Letter block, one Flower Power leaf block, and then proceeded to bind the table runner I quilted the previous night.

DW was my next target. I am basically going from the top of my UFO pile and working my way through. No more picking my way through. They all need to be quilted so I'm just doing them. This was the next one up.

I did custom quilting in the borders and a sewing machine motif throughout the center section. It's ready for binding and today (after we get back from Standish and Pinconning) I'll load the Raven. That was one of the backings I needed.

While we're in Pinconning I'll see if Jim wants to let me run into Bittersweet. I can always find something there. 😆

Still Smokey

Yesterday was pretty bad with the smoke. I had to light a few candles in the house to dissipate the bit that was coming in with the dogs. Or lack of a seal tight house. It helped.

After getting Virginia's Pickle Dish quilt off of Bernie (and all the post-quilting stuff that goes along with removing a customer quilt from the frame) I jumped on Marty and started working Ginny's third quilt; Laura Heines Houses. Here's some of the work going into the borders...

When I'm working a customer quilt I see every millimeter of the quilt even if it's an edge to edge design. I check for seam threads and any other abnormality that may pop up. This is what I found yesterday...

Seams pulling apart

I called to let her know (as I usually do unless it's something minor) and I'll pin and mark it for her when we ship her quilts next week.

All of today will be spent on Marty since this is taking way long than I thought. It's FPP and every seam needs to be ditched and I think I'm about 15 colors in on this one already. 

I constructed two Love Letter blocks, got row one and two together in section four and then blanket stitched a leaf block on Flower Power. DW was my next target and I was able to get the little canning table runner quilted out. I made the binding for that and had I not gotten Mike set up to work the next leaf block today, I probably would have attached it last night. Tonight maybe?

I found the next thing to go onto DW. Pressed it out. Made the back (pieced together some left over backing from previous quilts) found a batt that would work and it's ready for basting in. 

Blood Red Sun

While we were coming back from Lansing yesterday afternoon we stopped at the Alma Meijer on our way home. The smoke was getting pretty bad from the fires in central Canada. I was looking directly at the sun with my naked eye and this is what I captured...

Today isn't any better. It smells like everybody on the lake has a campfire going and there is no wind to dissipate the haze or smell. 

Thankfully, we aren't getting much in the house. We quickly open and shut the doors to get the girls in and out to do their potty thing. 

Before we left for Lansing I was able to get Virginias quilt quilted. It's still on the frame so I have all of that to do but once that's done I'll be moving over to Marty to work on this one for the rest of the day...

Laura Heine Houses

While going to sleep last night I was working through this in my head and I'm still not sure what direction I'm taking it. I may have to do some pre-quilting on the iPad or the preview paper.

Since we didn't get home until nearly 9:00 last night, nothing else was done in the studio yesterday.

But It's A Dry Heat

I checked the temperature at Camp Verde, Arizona yesterday while my studio thermometer was climbing. They were at 94 degrees. We were at...

104 DEGREES!!!!!!!!!

Yikes. The A/C NEVER shut off yesterday. In fact, that's what woke me up this morning when it did finally shut off and the perpetual hum wasn't present (it's right below my bedroom window).

I'll be finishing Virginia's Pickle Dish quilt today. We have to run to Lansing to deliver the reunion canopies later this afternoon so there's four hours (without visiting) down and back again. It's not supposed to be as hot today, but...

I made a Love Letter block, blanket stitched a Flower Power leaf block and then removed the quilt from DW that I finished the previous night. It's bound and finished.

Once I got that put away I loaded this little table runner onto DW to go with the other table runner I'm making as a leader/ender project. 

It was so hot yesterday the guys never sprayed the lake for weeds. Can you imagine being in a tyveks suit holding a heavy hose in a 104 degrees? And people on the lake were complaining about them not coming through like they were scheduled to. Sometimes ya gotta wonder about people don't ya? 

Did We Move Back to Arizona?

And of course, while we still don't have a lake, the temps today are reaching nearly 100 degrees. UGH! How many more days until cooler weather? For those who don't have A/C (and I know I have a couple of customers who don't) I hope you're doing okay!!!

After messing around with reunion stuff, I was pretty much done by lunchtime in what parts I play in the whole thing. It helps that we are handing over the baton, but we are still in training and follow-up mode so most of what we normally have to do still has to be done.

After lunch I wandered into the studio and started sewing something. The house was still decorated for the 4th (so had to put that away and get out other stuff) and I didn't have a bunting for a summer theme on the fireplace. This is what I ended up making.

Jim said they looked like pizza slices so I put some watermelon seeds in there after the pic was taken. Now they are definitely watermelon slices.

After finishing that I jumped on DW. I wanted to get the quilt done on there. Since it was just cross hatching throughout the blocks it was easy enough and I ended up finishing the quilting. I am going to use the dark green to bind it so I measured and cut all of those. 

It was nearly 8:00 when I got done and I called it a night. Today is a regularly scheduled work day and I'll be continuing on with the Pickle Dish for Virginia. 

Am I Doing Okay?

Here's the hand embroidery I got done while visiting with family and during visiting and the auction. I probably could have finished even the big one had the days not gotten so darn hot and humid. We are unpacking the trailer right now and I may or may not end up in the studio later today??? 

I'm still new at this and I'll look back on these in years to come thinking I could have done much better. But like my long arming it'll take time to perfect. 

When I'm Bored

Going to the reunion creates a lot of "dead" space in my day. Well, it didn't use to because we were in charge of everything, but like tonight is our personal camp site set up which doesn't only take us a few hours. The rest of the night we visit with other family members that have arrived.

When I'm between those "dead" spaces in my day I graze. Whatever I can get my hands on goes in my mouth. I feel nauseated by bed time from all the foods I've eaten, and I vow the next day not to do the same thing, but do I? Nope.

The other problem I have is sitting for long periods of time. I have to be moving. When we visit with folks, it's just sitting there. Talking. And sitting. And talking. And sitting some more. I needed something to take with me to keep me busy while we are visiting.

I have some hand embroidery work to do on the Quilt Room pattern and I thought I'd get a jump on it. I did not have the DMC floss colors needed and instead of trying to paw through my crap, I just purchased some quick items to make the weekend a bit more interesting.

Ready for the weekend

I have been watching a few embroidery tutorials and I have found several areas where I've been doing this hand work hobby incorrectly. Hopefully I'll have better success this weekend.

I'm A Woman...

...I can change my mind! I did do some packing last night in the trailer despite my having said I wasn't going to. We have rain coming tomorrow (what a great way to start out a four-day camping trip) and it's supposed to be icky muggy today. 

I am at the half-way point on Virginia's Pickle Dish quilt. Jim can't believe how much better it looks than the first go with the other long armer. 

I did a Love Letter block and two leaf blocks prior to getting into the trailer stuff as it was a bit warm yesterday and the trailer had gotten hot with my having shut it up the previous night.

After packing for the night (I don't have enough clothes/food to pack it entirely yet) I was itching to do something small. It was after 7:00 already and I didn't want to fire up DW as I knew I would be out there until late if I did.

I picked up this pattern at Seven Sisters a few weeks ago and looked through it earlier. The way it was packaged would have let me to forgo starting anything right now. Pages were folded in half in plastic bags for each "month" this original BOM was released. 

I'm an organizer and so I took them all out of their packages, organized them into months/blocks, three hole punched them and then put them into a binder. 

I have an empty crate under Marty I'll put the blocks as I finish them prior to putting sections together. There is a bit of hand embroidery in this pattern and I'm going to attempt it as it should be. 

Jim and I are having our date day today and while we are in Midland getting groceries (for us and the dog sitter) I'll pop into Hobby Lobby to get the floss and hoop I need to do such a thing. Maybe this will keep me busy at the reunion instead of constantly wanting to each junk food. 

And It Begins

Jim pulled the trailer up yesterday late in the afternoon. I was already done working and we don't want the thing sitting in the direct sunshine while we have to clean it out from whatever got in it over the winter.

Given what I was cleaning out of it, it appears Mr. Mousy got in earlier this spring when all the Comet had  washed away from around it in the spring rains. Our barn is not weather tight, just resistant.

After getting the trailer cleaned and prepped for packing (we have some supplies coming for the trailer today and tomorrow so I won't pack much tonight) I came back into the studio to do some other stuff. 

A Love Letter block was done and two more leaf blocks were blanket stitched for Flower Power. 

I had every intention of getting on DW after working the two leaf blocks but I was pooped and it was after 7:30.

One customer coming to pick up this morning and that's about it. 

It May Be Time

The computer I'm on currently is a Mac. This Mac is about 10 years old and it's getting kind of sick. Slow to load. Slow to respond. Often items just disappear or the machine tanks. I think maybe during back to school sales I need to investigate a replacement.

It's DeGroot family reunion week. I'll be dividing my time between the studio and the camper getting everything loaded. The shopping has been delegated out to other folks, but we still have a majority of the reunion stuff. That's supposed to be distributed out when we arrive but we'll see. I don't think people realize just how much we do and how much space it takes to do it. 

We wanted to go somewhere yesterday just to get out of the house and the truck took us to Elm Creek; about the only place that was open after the holiday. Here's what I brought home.

Those pillows are personalized and I'll get started on those this fall (or sooner) so I don't have to sweat shop Santa this winter.

Virginia's Pickle Dish

This is the quilt Jim had to skim and now we're getting ready to make it right. The previous long armer really messed it up and I'm hoping to give the customer back something she's proud to have in her home.

Violations

Notice how late I'm blogging this morning? It was a very restless night and I didn't actually get out of bed until almost 10:00. Then the kids called from Germany so here we are finally.

Jim and I are trying to find something to do today so while he's in the shower, I'll share my quilt police violation.

The first of 15

The directions on this piece are to fuse these petals down using some kind of fusible web. I don't like how stiff fusible web leaves the block. I hate it in fact. But I have zero desire to learn turn-edge appliqué and my thumb probably wouldn't deal with it any way.

There are a number of fusibles out there claiming to not a) gum up the needle when stitching it down and b)leaving the quilt soft and pliable after application. I find that it's either one or the other and I haven't found one yet that is true to both statements. Misty Fuse is about as close as it gets and you can still tell there is a webbing underneath. 

Solution? I had a hair brained idea to just cut the shapes out without fusible. Position them. Use Roxannes glue baste sparingly to get them to set down just enough until I could get them blanket stitched in. The result is above. The quilt police would be handcuffing me to a post!

I have two leaf sections already stitched in place with only minimal issues and it was issues easily dealt with (waving while stitching them down). Once I repositioned the piece, they stitched down fine. And honestly, that may be because I've got a thin batt down underneath to act as an interfacing. I'd rather use a batt than a woven/non-woven interface because, again, I want the block to be pliable. 

Prior to working on Flower Power I did the temperature quilt blocks for the week and after gluing all the leaves down to ready them for blanket stitching I moved over to DW. Here's what he's wearing for the next few days.

OMG, see the block towards the bottom right hand side? It looks wrong. And I'm just noticing this? It's too late now because I've already started quilting this.

Well, this is a utility quilt anyway so I guess it's going to be okay. 

Nearing a Milestone

I have three more quilts to long arm and I'll hit a milestone. More when I get there. 

Reunion is next weekend. Jim will be pulling the trailer out probably Sunday night or Monday morning. My life will be split between work and getting ready to go since we basically do everything that's required to run the thing. Let's not even go there. 

After getting Berndadettes quilt done on Marty (the Farmyard Friends by Lori Holt), I planned on spending the rest of the day for just me. Which I did.

I started working on getting the third table runner finished but after reading the pattern, decided I didn't want to production line sew 60 flappy pieces onto the pinwheels I've been building for the past month or so. I'll add flappy pieces on as I construct other blocks in the future.

All three long arms are pretty empty right now. Jim is frame ironing on Bernie for the next load and I haven't take the quilt off Marty, but there's nothing there to long arm. DW had these two above pieces removed yesterday so he's totally naked.

Once I get done with temperature blocks later this morning, something will be next on DW and it's a mystery which one will be selected. Hmmm?????

Weather Cooperation

It was a wonderful day yesterday with the storms. I didn't have to shut the machine down for lightning and hopefully, with any luck, I'll be able to get the Farmyard Friends quilt done today.

Getting the backgrounds prepped for the circles

To give my arm a reset I sewed the corners on each of the background blocks for Flower Power. Once those were finished I jumped on DW. If I had to stay up all night I WAS going to finish the Judy Niemeyer that's been sitting there for over a week.

I didn't get much sleep the night before but my determination won over and I powered through getting the piece done. 

I must like binding (which I DO NOT) because I'll have the table topper and the table runner to both bind this weekend once I get the marks off this piece below. I had to do a second spray this morning.

I'm technically closed today but I am still working on customer stuff. Once the quilt on Marty is completed though, the rest of the weekend is mine to play and enjoy our countries 250th birthday.
